A celebration of life
for Mary E. Meyer, age
89, will be at 2:00 P.M.
Thursday, December 28,
2006, at the Covington
Christian Church, with
Rev. Connie Schlarb
officiating. Burial
will be in the Billings
Union Cemetery, with
arrangements by
Anderson-Burris Funeral
Home.
Mary was born to Orville
and Nora Williams on a
farm west of Billings on
August 14, 1917, and
passed away on Sunday,
December 24, 2006, at
Greenbrier Nursing Home
in Enid.
She graduated from
Billings High School,
and because of her
passion for teaching
children to read, she
began teaching at a
rural school near
Billings. She taught
there for one year. She
then attended college at
Tonkawa. On June 25,
1940, she married John
T. Meyer at Sterling,
Oklahoma. A son, Dean,
was born October 13,
1941. They moved to
Covington in 1946, when
John became the
elementary principal.
Mary began teaching
third grade at Covington
in 1950 while attending
Central State
University, where she
graduated in 1953. She
was honored as the
Garfield County Teacher
of the Year in 1969.
Mary was a 4-H leader
and active in Home and
School Club for many
years. She was also a
member of the Covington
Christian Church and the
Enid Chapter of the
Order of Eastern Star.
Mary retired in May,
1977, was presented with
a plaque in recognition
of dedicated service to
the boys and girls of
Covington, Douglas and
Marshall Schools. Then
in May 1979, Mary and
John were presented with
a plaque in appreciation
for many years of
service to
Covington-Douglas
Schools. She joined
Garfield County Retired
Teachers and became a
board member of the
Tri-County Senior
Citizens. John and
Mary enjoyed traveling
after retirement with
friends from “Minnesota
to Texas” until his
death in August, 1987.
Greenbrier became Mary’s
home in March, 2006.
She was a devoted wife,
mother, grandmother,
great-grandmother,
educator and friend.
She is survived by one
son Dean Meyer and wife
Karan of Cleo Springs;
three grandchildren,
Brian Meyer and wife
Becky of Enid, Brenda
Martin and husband Greg
of Broken Arrow, and
Brent Meyer and wife
Leann of Broken Arrow;
eight
great-grandchildren,
Rachel and Meleah Meyer
of Enid, Braden, Madison
and Mia Martin of Broken
Arrow, and Cassody,
Holli and Karlee Meyer
of Broken Arrow;
sister-in-law Ann Otis
of Throckmorton, TX; and
a host of friends.
She was preceded in
death by her husband,
John, and brother,
Dorrell Dean Williams.
Memorials may be made
through the funeral home
to Covington Christian
Church or Hospice Circle
of Love.
