He was born to
Troy and Catherine
McDonald on October 17,
1951, in Little Rock,
Arkansas, and went home
to be with his Lord
Friday, May 15, 2009, in
Enid after a battle with
liver cancer.
Steve came to Enid
as a child and lived
here most of his life.
As a young man he joined
the U.S. Army and went
to Viet Nam from 1969 –
1971. In 1984, after
many years of drug and
alcohol abuse, he
entered into Valley Hope
in Cushing. Always
giving God the credit,
he never took a drink or
drugs again. It was
also at that point, he
was able to start a long
loving relationship with
his wonderful daughter
Nicole. He and Carolyn
married on October 1,
1985 after the death of
her first husband. He
loved and raised her
young children as though
they were his own and
became part of their
biological father’s
(Johnny Long) family as
a brother. It was at
that time he entered
into a relationship with
Jesus Christ, and never
turned back. For Steve,
things were, “all the
way or nothing”. He was
totally dedicated to
serving Christ. In
1991, at the urging of
God and Carolyn, he
moved his family to
Sitka, Alaska for 4
years, and then to
Ketchikan, Alaska, where
he worked as a
commercial fisherman and
then a drug and alcohol
abuse counselor for
youth and adults. He
was also instrumental in
the starting of several
churches there in
Alaska. He was an avid
fisherman, hunter, and
loved to be in the
mountains. Never
finishing high school,
he received his GED in
2003. After 14 years in
beautiful Alaska, he and
his wife moved back to
Enid to care for his
mother. This move gave
them the opportunity to
purchase another Harley
Davidson. There was not
enough roadway in
Ketchikan for long
rides, so he and Carolyn
promised themselves that
would be one of their
compensations for
leaving Alaska. It also
gave him the opportunity
to be around their
children and
grandchildren whom he
taught all about wading
in the creek, ruining
their clothes with mud,
and catching tadpoles,
snakes and armadillos.
He had always hoped to
move back to Alaska, the
land he loved, but soon
after their move to OK,
he became ill and
eventually had to quit
his work as a handyman,
tree trimmer and lawn
man. Although, before
becoming too ill, he and
Carolyn had the
opportunity to take a
Harley trip to
Nashville. He also
traveled to Kenya,
Africa, and he and
Carolyn traveled to
China and North Korea.
He went on a mission
trip to Homa, LA after
Hurricane Katrina to
help there. He sought
to, and succeeded in
raising their children
in the things of the
Lord whom he loved more
than anything. He was
active in Grace World
Outreach as a member of
the worship team. Steve
was a passionate lover
of music and dance. He
will surely be
remembered for his
sincere love for
people. His goal was to
make sure everyone he
came into contact with
heard the Gospel.
He is survived by
his wife Carolyn of the
home; his mother,
Catherine A. Clarke of
Grand Rapids, MI; two
brothers, Barry of
Jacksonville, Ark, and
Charles of Alva; one
sister, Cathy Byerly of
Grand Rapids, MI; two
step sisters, Sheila
Johnston of Enid, and
Connie Mornahinveg of
Baton Rouge, LA; He is
also survived by his
daughter Nicole Campbell
and husband Troy of
Enid; daughter Chace
Saumell of Providance
Village, TX; and son
John Michael Long and
wife Stephanie of Enid;
five grandchildren,
Felicity Welch, Zoe and
Trent Saumell, Chloe and
David Campbell, and
several nieces and
nephews. Steve also had
many spiritual children
and family from all over
the world.
Steve was preceded
in death by his father
Troy, step-brother Craig
Clarke, and his beloved
grandma, Sara Lacy.
Memorials may be
made to Grace World
Outreach Center, 2502 W.
