funeral service for Roy
Garner Nelson, age 87,
will be at 11:00 a.m.
Monday, Sept. 11, 2006,
at the Carrier
Congregational United
Church of Christ.
Gordon Jantz and Rev.
Sue Miers will
officiate. Burial will
be at Rosehill Cemetery
in Carrier with
arrangements by
Anderson-Burris Funeral
Home.
He
was born to William
Chalmers and Lucy Inez
(Mahaffey) Nelson on
Jan. 13, 1919, on the
family farm west of
Carrier. He died
Thursday, Sept. 7, 2006,
at Integris Bass Baptist
Hospital in Enid.
Roy
attended Prairie View
School through the 8th
grade and graduated from
Carrier High School in
1937. He then moved to
Stillwater to attend
Oklahoma A & M College
where he was a member of
Alpha Gamma Rho
fraternity and the Aggie
Club. Roy married
Nellie Fern Graham on
June 5, 1940 in
Stillwater where they
continued to live until
he graduated with a B.
S. Degree in Agronomy in
1941. Roy’s first job
was with the
Agricultural
Stabilization and
Conservation Service,
(ASCS) in Stillwater.
He transferred to the
Enid and Fairview ASCS
offices over the next
three years. They moved
back to the family farm
in 1943 where they lived
and raised wheat and
livestock until 1985.
At that time they moved
to Enid but he continued
farming until 2003. Roy
was a member of Garfield
County and Oklahoma Farm
Bureau since 1944. He
served on the County
Board for 8 years. He
enjoyed assisting his
children with their 4-H
and FFA activities and
projects. He was named
an honorary member of
Carrier FFA in 1963 and
received recognition for
23 years of service to
the Garfield County ASCS
committee in 1991.
Roy
was a committed
Christian and lifelong
member of the Carrier
Congregational United
Church of Christ where
he served as a Deacon,
Sunday School treasurer
for 28 years, and on
many church committees.
In March 1948, he joined
the Masonic Anderson
Lodge #160 in Goltry.
He was a 32nd
degree Mason and earned
his 50 year pin in
1998. Roy was a strong
supporter of the Carrier
Public Schools.
Roy
is survived by his wife
Nellie Fern of the home;
one son, Ronald Roy
Nelson and wife Jane
(Willingham) Nelson of
Carrier; one daughter,
Denise RoNell Jones and
husband Don of Enid;
five grandchildren,
Amber Davis and husband
Jason, of Oklahoma City,
Ryan Nelson and wife
Susan, of Chicago,
Illinois, Amanda Brandon
and husband Jonathan, of
Fayetteville, North
Carolina, Chad Newby of
Stillwater and Allison
Jones of Enid; three
great-grandchildren,
Grace and Claire Davis,
Levi Garner Brandon; and
two step grandchildren,
Lesley and Jeffrey
Jones.
He
was preceded in death by
his parents, four
brothers, Lowell,
Dellis, Earl and John
Nelson; and two sisters,
Hazel Bolenbaugh and
Opal Wayman.
Memorials may be made
through the funeral home
to Carrier
Congregational Church
and/or Oklahoma Medical
Research Foundation –
Cancer Division.
