Msgt Roy O. Wilson came
into this world on
30Nov38 to Roy O. and
Ada Marie Wilson of
Enid. On 12Feb09 a
celebration occurred as
he went home to the joy
of our Lord Jesus
Christ.
Roy was a graduate of
Enid High School and
went into the Air
National Guard in his
senior year. Then, in
the tradition of young
airmen, he entered into
a life long love,
marrying Mary Beth
Turner, who thought he
was “dashing” in his
uniform. “Love is
blind”, it also has no
sense of dates, for the
young pair eloped on
Halloween 1956.
Roy went active duty in
the Air Force in 1957.
He became a Crew Chief
on six different
aircraft… not busy
enough with his career,
he found time to have
two spooks, remember
Halloween? Roy G. and
Damon, both boys.
He dragged his family to
Europe, then back to the
United States. Roy
became a “Flight
Engineer” of the RC-121
and EC-121, the
forerunner to the AWAC.
Serving in Viet Nam in
1968 and again in 1970,
Roy was nominated for
the Congressional Medal
of Honor, bringing a
wounded aircraft and
crew of eighteen back to
their base.
Roy continued to fly
until 1973 when he
changed his M O S to the
medical field. He
became Msgt at McClellan
AFB and then 1st
Sergeant at Vance AFB in
1976.
Retiring in 1977 from
the Air Force, he opened
a lapidary shop and
taught rock cutting and
silversmithing at Vance.
Due to economic
conditions, the shop was
closed and he went to
work with Northrop,
working for another 23
years before retiring.
Roy was a devoted
husband, a loving
Father, and a terrific
“Papa”. He will be
greatly missed by his
family and friends.
Roy is survived by his
wife, Mary Beth; his
sons and their wives,
Roy and Lori, and Damon
and Lynne; a
granddaughter Emily
(Wilson) Ferguson and
Luke; a grandson Ben
Wilson and Candice; two
great-grandsons; two
great-granddaughters;
and sister Jo Anne
Reed. As you can see
there were many more
spooks that followed.
He was preceded in death
by two sisters, Margaret
Martindale and Gerry
Bingham Doty.
In lieu of flowers,
please donate to Hospice
Circle of Love.
