Lucile was born in Enid to Pete Markos and Grace Haworth Markos on December 31, 1923.  Her mother passed away when she was 8 months old.  Her aunt and uncle, James and Vivian Markos, along with her father, raised her.  She attended Enid schools, graduating from Enid High School in 1941.  She was a member of the Enid Legionettes Drum and Bugle Corps for 4 years.  During World War II, she worked at the Enid Army Air Field (now Vance) for 4 years.  On June 30, 1946, she married Melvin W. Schroeder in Enid.  They farmed and raised cattle southeast of Enid.  They also bred, raised, and raced thoroughbred horses.  They belonged to a square dance club, card club, and she sang in the church choir.  They moved to Enid in 1978.  Lucile traveled to Athens, Greece, twice to be with her beloved aunts, uncles and cousins.  Her dear friend, Tammy Gatten, made the trip to Greece with her the first time.  She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.  Her family was her pride and joy, and her love for them was unconditional.  Survivors include her husband, Melvin of the home; daughter, Vicki K. Smith of Enid; two sons, Larry M. Schroeder of Waukomis and Tony M. Schroeder of South Carolina; three grandchildren, Scott W. Sims, Kevin J. Schroeder and wife Staci, and Angela L. Schroeder; one great-grandchild, Sylvia T. Schroeder.  She is also survived by a half-sister, Martha Kelly of Yukon, OK, and her son Michael Harrison of California; a life-long dear friend, Louise Whitlow; a long-time devoted and loving friend, Colleen Stephenson; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, George and Caroline Cowan, who loved her and helped her during her illness.  Her children would also like to thank her long-time caregiver, Betty Davidson, for her loving care and devotion.  She is also survived by many friends that she treasured, and by her loving relatives in Greece.

Lucile went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 after a long illness.  The funeral will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, July 18, 2009 at Anderson-Burris Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Kenneth Wade and Rev. Dave Jones officiating.  Burial will be in Enid Cemetery, with arrangements by Anderson-Burris Funeral Home.  Visitation with the family will be Friday 6:00 to 7:30 PM at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Enid, or Waukomis Christian Church in Waukomis, OK.
