Derrel
passed peacefully from
this life on Oct. 19,
2009 at his home in
Enid.
Derrel was
born May 9, 1952 in
Okla. City, OK to Joe
Marvin Wise and Thelma
Jean Clark Wise. Derrel
grew up following his
military father to
various places in the US
and Germany. He had
many tales of being an
“army brat”, such as
biking in Germany,
German food, life in the
military housing, and
going to London on his
senior trip to see the
real live nude version
of the play “Hair”.
Derrel started
kindergarten and
graduated from high
school in Germany,
although he also
attended school in the
States depending on
where his dad was
stationed.
Derrel
married Vicki Raetz May
22, 1972. They had
three wonderful
children, Bonnie and
twins, Shane and
Clayton. Derrel would
laugh telling about how
the nurses surprised
him, showing him one
little baby boy and then
saying “and here’s
another one just like
him!” No one knew he
and Vicki would make a
double play!
Derrel
remarked many times that
the happiest time of his
life was when his kids
were growing up and he
was coaching and
attending their sporting
events.
Derrel
began his teaching
career rather late in
life going back to
college at about the
same time that his sons
went to college. All
three graduated from
Oklahoma State
University, all as
teachers and coaches.
He was so proud of that,
but the only time he
didn’t cheer for the
Sooners was when they
were playing the
Cowboys.
Derrel’s
first teaching job was
at Emerson Jr. High in
Enid before moving to
the High School. Derrel
taught his favorite
subject, History. He
was very proud of the
success of his AP class
last year. Derrel also
coached his entire
teaching career. He
began as an assistant 7th
grade football coach,
later becoming the head
coach. At various times
Derrel has coached girls
and boys Jr. High
basketball and tennis.
Derrel coached with many
different colleagues,
including his best
friend, Jim Flemming,
who preceded him in
death. No doubt Derrel
and Jim are on some
heavenly golf course
teeing up right now.
Derrel
married Jeanne Nelson on
Nov. 22, 1999, in Enid
where they made their
home. Derrel was a good
friend and advisor to
his step-children,
welcoming them into his
home at all times.
Derrel is
survived by his wife
Jeanne of the home; his
parents, Joe and Jean
Wise of Midwest City;
sister Ramona Burden;
brother Dan Wise of St.
Louis, MO; daughter
Bonnie, her husband Kris
Norwood, their children
Cody and Shyann of Union
City; son Shane Wise,
his wife Kendra, their
children Joey and
Cameron of Sapulpa; son
Clayton Wise, his wife
Rachel, their children
Lexi and Dex of Sapulpa.
His
step-children, Kati and
Brady Ward, their
children Brice and Beth
of Conyers, GA; Gene
Bryant, his wife Kelly
and daughters Britney
and Jessica of Yukon;
David McDowell, his wife
Patti of Salem, OR; Ryan
Koch of Woodward; and
Jimmy Koch of Enid; the
brother of his children
Ryan Nix of Okla. City;
close friends Brandy and
Jerry Venable and two
special “grandfriends”
Corey and Kyle Venable;
numerous nieces and
nephews.
Derrel
loved his family. He
was deeply loved and
will be forever missed.
Memorials
may be made to Enid
Public School Foundation
