Ruth Smith

Ruth Smith passed from this life on September 1, 2013. There will be a memorial service at a later date. Cremation arrangements are by Anderson-Burris Funeral Home & Crematory. Ruth was the daughter of Mattie and Charles Dilldine of Drummond, born in Thomas, Oklahoma, and moved to Enid when she was eleven. She attended business school in Oklahoma City, where she met and married Forrest Smith. They resided in Enid. Ruth was Quality Assurance Manager for Hunt’s processing plant and a senior seamstress and tailor for Asphahl’s, maker of high-end children’s clothing. She also attended junior college in Oklahoma City, and later became a licensed cosmetologist. Ruth owned and operated Smith’s Hair Salon, and finally retired to care for her mother. Forrest died in 1978. She later met her 20-year companion, Leo Campbell, who died in 2006. Ruth loved being outdoors – She enjoyed fishing and traveling around Oklahoma and nearby states, exploring scenic beauties and lakes where she could fish. She kept her own vegetable garden and loved preparing her harvest in delicious ways. Ruth was known for her homegrown, homemade bread & butter pickles. She was an excellent cook and made many cakes and pies, which she donated to Moose events and baked for friends’ celebrations. She also carefully tended and enjoyed her lovely flower garden. She was active in the Enid Moose Lodge for 50 years, where she held many offices, and was a member of VFW for 25 years. She was also a member of Enid First Presbyterian Church and President of the Solo Club. Ruth was an active member and Water Walker at the Enid YMCA. Ruth’s true passions were dancing, music and fashion. She was a member of the Golden Swingers as well as a tap dance troupe that performed at various venues around Enid. She attended local dances focusing on country and western dancing, as late as March 2013, and made many friends there. She painted and played the organ. Ruth also loved making costumes and many of her own clothing ensembles, which she often wore dancing. Ruth’s greatest gift was her love of people, and always found something to like about everyone. She was always willing to jump in and help and lovingly support her many friends, family and wonderful neighbors. She will be sorely missed by them all. Ruth was lovingly attended in her final months by her close friend Betty Bingham and devoted friend Harold Peat. She is survived by three much-loved and loving nieces: Margaret Brock, Julie Dodson and Gloria Spear. Ruth also left eight other nieces and four nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Bob and Jesse Dilldine, and sisters Jewell Jones, Opal Blaylock and Emma Myers.
