A Memorial service to celebrate the life of Betty L. Harris will be held Friday, May 3, 2:00 pm at the Holmes-Coffey-Murray Chapel in Durant, Oklahoma. Betty passed away on April 22 in Fairview, Oklahoma. She was a resident at the Fairview Fellowship Home. Anderson-Burris, Funeral Home and Crematory, Enid, Oklahoma is handling local arrangements. Betty Lou, daughter of Clarence and Lillie (Powell) Green was born on April 7, 1929 in Durant, Oklahoma. She was born and raised in Durant and graduated with the Durant High School Class of 1947. In 1948 Betty married J.D. Harris and their 67 years of marriage began in Durant. A son, Gerald Wayne, was born in 1949 and the family moved to Borger, Texas for employment opportunities. Another son, Phillip Lynn was born in 1953 followed by a daughter, Mary Susan, born in 1954. Betty worked at various county offices at the Hutchinson County Courthouse in Stinnett, Texas and later while she was “semi-retired” in the Bryan County Courthouse in Durant. Betty and J.D. lived and worked for many years as Dorm Parents at the Abilene Boys Ranch in Abilene, Texas. Betty was “Mom” to many children as well as adults. Betty loved fishing at Hickory Hollow and always bragged about catching more fish than J.D. Betty is survived by son, Gerald and Jane Harris, Fairview, a sister, Emma Hull, Durant, a brother Clarence Green, Jr., Durant, granddaughters, Jana Hickman of Fairview, Oklahoma, Jennifer Copley of Delaware, Ohio, and Kara Harris of White Settlement, Texas, 11 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, J.D., son, Phillip Harris, daughter Mary Susan Duntley, granddaughter, Marie Foti, sisters Velma Hemperly and Mary Lewsaw. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Harris Family Scholarship Fund, Northwest Technology Center Foundation, 1801 11th St. , Alva, Oklahoma 73717.
