Rev. Sherry Lynn Shaw

May 21, 1952 - February 27, 2022

Rev. Sherry Lynn (Scates) Shaw was born on May 21, 1952 and went to be with Jesus on Sunday, February 27, 2022. Sherry was the only daughter of Keith Scates and Ione (Dunshee) Scates. She was born in Woodward, Oklahoma and moved with her family to Pond Creek, Oklahoma just before her senior year. She graduated from Pond Creek as a Bear Cat in 1970. Sherry attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva and Oklahoma State University in Stillwater before starting a family with her first husband, Jerry Barr. She married E.W. “Bill” Shaw on Oct 4, 1980, and together they raised their five children. Sherry had a long, beautiful life of service. She was a loving, nurturing mother and grandmother who dedicated her life to teaching and supporting her family. She spent countless hours praying and cheering for her five children and ten grandchildren. She served her community through many organizations including the March of Dimes, the Junior Welfare League of Enid, and as an EMT with the Pond Creek Volunteer Fire Department. Following her call to ministry, she earned her Master of Divinity from Phillips Theological Seminary and was ordained into ministry by the Christian Church Disciples of Christ on her birthday in 1998 and . completed the Clinical Pastoral Care Program at Presbyterian Hospital in Oklahoma City in 1999. She served as minister for the UCC Church of Medford, the First Christian Church of Pond Creek, and the Ames Christian Church and as chaplain for the Hospice Circle of Love in Enid. In 1990 she traveled to Hong Kong and smuggled Bibles into China. While enjoying retirement, she continued her ministry by leading discipleship communities and a grief support group at Willow View Methodist Church. For the last few years, she has shared scriptures through daily Facebook posts that often-included photos of her family and beautiful flowers. “Well done, good and faithful servant!” Matthew 25:23. Sherry was preceded in death by her infant brother, Ronnie Scates, and her parents. She is survived by her husband, E.W. “Bill” Shaw; her brothers, Mark Scates and David Scates; daughter, Elizabeth and William North and their children, Connor and Caysie; daughter, Michelle and Grant Brown and their children, Isabel, Zachary, and Zander; son, Joshua and Megan Barr and their children Jacob and Noah; her stepson, Garin Shaw and his daughter, Lexi; stepdaughter, Tanna and Jeff Hoopingarner, and their children Evan, Reed, and Blake. Pastor Sherry has touched thousands of lives through her ministry. Even through her valiant battle against COVID 19, she prayed for and with her Bass Integris healthcare team and other patients. Her love and leadership will be deeply missed. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, March 4, 2022, at Willow View Methodist Church in Enid, OK officiated by Pastor Mark McAdow. Memorials may be made in Sherry’s honor to the “Answered Prayers Fund” at Willow View Methodist Church or the First Christian Church of Pond Creek.
